MIS combines tech with business to get people the information they need to do
their jobs better/faster/smarter ways. Information is the lifeblood of all
organizations . They all need someone who understands business (programmers
don't) and understands tech (managers don't). MIS professionals bring both
together to deliver information solutions
An 'MIS' is a planned system of the collecting, processing, storing and
disseminating data in the form of information needed to carry out the functions
of management. In a way it is a documented report of the activities those were
planned and executed. According to Philip Kotler "A marketing information
system consists of people, equipment, and procedures to gather, sort, analyze,
evaluate, and distribute needed, timely, and accurate information to marketing
decision makers.
An MIS can include software that helps in decision making, data resources such
as databases, the hardware resources of a system, decision support systems,
people management and project management applications, and any computerized
processes that enable the department to run efficiently.
In summary , when we say that “ an MIS is an integrated man – machine systems
that provided information to supports the planning and control function of
managers in an origination . It does the following function.
- sub serves managerial function.
- collects stores , evaluates information systematically and routinely.
- supports planning and control decisions.

business environment . For Example, Marketing manager need information about
sales performance and trends, financial manger returns, production managers
needs information analyzing resources requirement and worker productivity and

be developed to provide modern managers with the specific marketing ,
financial, production and personnel information products they required to
support their decision making responsibilities .

relevant information for sound decision – making . Due to increase in the size
and complexity of organizations, managers have lost personal contact with the
scene of operations.
2. In Minimizes information overload : MIS change the larger amount of data in
to summarized form and there by avoids the confusion which may arise when

information
Types of MIS Systems
Document Management System:The DMS is focused primarily on the
storage and retrieval of self-contained electronic data resources in the
document form. Generally, The DMS is designed to help the organizations to
manage the creation and flow of documents through the provision of a
centralized repository. The workflow of the DMS encapsulates business rules and
metadata.
Content Management System:The CMS assist in the creation,
distribution, publishing, and management of the enterprise information. These
systems are generally applicable on the online content which is dynamically
managed as a website on the internet or intranet. The CMS system can also be
called as ‘web content management’ (WCM).
Record Management System:The RMS are the recordkeeping systems
which capture, maintain and provide access to the records including paper as
well as electronic documents, efficiently and timely.
Learning Management System: The LMS are generally used to
automate the e-learning process which includes the administrative process like
registering students, managing training resources, creating courseware,
recording results etc.
Geographic Information System:The GIS are special purpose,
computer-based systems that facilitate the capture, storage, retrieval, display
and analysis of the spatial data.
Accounting management information systems: All accounting reports
are shared by all levels of accounting managers
Financial management information systems: The financial
management information system provides financial information to all financial
managers within an organization including the chief financial officer. The
chief financial officer analyzes historical and current financial activity,
projects future financial needs, and monitors and controls the use of funds
over time using the information developed by the MIS department.
Manufacturing management information systems: More than any
functional area, operations have been impacted by great advances in technology.
As a result, manufacturing operations have changed. For instance, inventories
are provided just in time so that great amounts of money are not spent for
warehousing huge inventories. In some instances, raw materials are even
processed on railroad cars waiting to be sent directly to the factory. Thus
there is no need for warehousing.
Marketing management information systems: A marketing management
information system supports managerial activity in the area of product
development, distribution, pricing decisions, promotional effectiveness, and
sales forecasting. More than any other functional area, marketing systems rely
on external sources of data. These sources include competition and customers,
for example.
Human resources management information systems: Human resources
management information systems are concerned with activities related to
workers, managers, and other individuals employed by the organization. Because
the personnel function relates to all other areas in business, the human
resources management information system plays a valuable role in ensuring
organizational success. Activities performed by the human resources management
information systems include, work-force analysis and planning, hiring,
training, and job assignments
